Crazy for Kefir

Like many fermented foods Kefir is loaded with probiotics, vitamins and minerals, and other characteristics that your body loves! Kefir is a fermented dairy product that is made by adding kefir grains (a combination of bacteria and yeast) to milk. The fermentation process produces probiotics, which are beneficial live microorganisms that can promote good gut health by balancing the bacteria in the digestive system. The result is a tangy, slightly effervescent beverage. Kefir is also a good source of protein, calcium, and other essential nutrients. Additionally, some studies have suggested that consuming kefir may have other potential health benefits, such as improving digestion, boosting the immune system, and reducing inflammation. However, it is important to note that traditional kefir is a dairy product, so people with lactose intolerance or a milk allergy may not be able to tolerate it. Kefir can also be made with plant-based milk alternatives such as soy or coconut milk. It is also important to choose kefir that is unsweetened or low in added sugars and to consume it in moderation as it can be high in calories.

Chocolate lovers, looking for a delicious and nutritious, probiotic-packed, gut-happy afternoon smoothie? This one’s a favorite! This Organic Chocolate Kefir Smoothie recipe provides loads of nutrients, plus gives you that much needed chocolate fix that you sometimes crave! Blend the Kefir, frozen banana, almond butter, dates, cacao nibs, chia seeds and hemp seeds (all organic is best, if possible) in a high-powered blender and mix well until smooth.   If you’re not in need of a chocolate fix, not to worry. Here is an easy recipe for a Mango Orange Kefir Smoothie.  The mango is delicious, citrusy and so refreshing!   Any fruit or combination of fruits can be added, so if you’re not into mango feel free to swap it out. It’s always a good idea to take advantage of in season fruits. Fresh strawberries, berries, and bananas are just a few options to name but be creative and throw in whatever sounds good.  A fresh strawberry kefir smoothie is always a good idea!   Kefir smoothies can be a great addition to a balanced and varied diet, but should not replace whole foods such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.  They are great for (or with) breakfast and they also really hit the spot when you’re in need of a nutritious afternoon snack!
