Spring cleaning.
Spring cleaning is a great idea for so many reasons. It helps get rid of clutter that has accumulated over time, making your space cleaner and more organized, making it feel like new. It also helps to boost your mood and makes you feel more relaxed and comfortable in your living space.
Not only is spring the perfect time to clean your home, think of it as the perfect time to start fresh and clean up your diet too. That’s the real mood-booster! Spring is the season for fresh produce, so take advantage of it! Try adding extra of your favorite fruits and veggies to your meals each day. For optimum gut health, our bellies like an assortment of fruits and veggies (think all the colors of the rainbow) to feed a variety of different microbes, who in turn support your health. Generally speaking, high quality foods are foods which are as close to their original form as possible. Think fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, as well as seafood and animal products.
When choosing proteins, make lean choices such as chicken, fish, tofu and legumes. They’re low in fat and high in protein, which is great for building muscle and keeping you satisfied. Cut back on processed foods, which tend to be high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats.
Avoid sugary drinks, like soda and energy drinks. Instead, drink water, unsweetened tea or coffee, or sparkling water enhanced with a splash of fruit juice for a refreshing treat.  Have a bit of fermented food each day, like kefir, kimchi, kraut and kombucha (the 4 K’s). The trick is to have a little and have it often to get the maximum probiotic benefit.
Remember to practice mindful eating and take your time eating. This can help you better recognize when you’re full, and avoid overeating. Focus on what healthy things you can add in to your meal times and snacking and then the ultra-processed foods will then phase themselves out. Start small, and gradually make changes to your eating habits. With time, healthy eating will become a natural part of your lifestyle.
Don’t forget to treat yourself! Incorporate a small amount of your favorite indulgences into your diet each week. Moderation is really the key to long-term success.

By optimizing your health this spring, you will set yourself up to feel great this summer and all year round!
